Judge orders woman to remove face veil from home
A Florida woman who told authorities her husband raped her in 2007 told a judge Thursday that the woman needed to take off her hijab while serving a 30-day jail term after she filed a complaint.
Beverly N. Williams was sentenced to 20 months in jail for domestic violence aggravated by sexual battery after pleading no contest to the charge of aggravated battery to a spouse or common-law partner.
A judge set sentencing for March 8, just weeks before she can leave prison, according to Judge Mark Lott of the Palm Beach County Jail in Tampa.
Williams and her husband, William S. Williams, 39, have three children.
After the attack at their home in March 2007, the woman and Williams had been married for less than four years.
But Williams had allegedly made another sexual threat to her then-14-year-old daughter before leaving their home with her and other children. Her daughter then told her brother, and the suspect's brother told the police, according to court records.
When authorities later caught up to the suspect, the victim said she was in the restroom with Williams when the suspect lifted her, grabbed her around the head, held her down and forced her into his car trunk.
Williams, then 32, had a gun and tried to flee, so he called 911, authorities said. He fled, but was recaptured after being shot.
The next day, the victim contacted Williams, who told her he'd been assaulted by the suspect's former boyfriend, who had threatened to kill her child, authorities said. |
